Is more teeth on a pocket bike clutch and less teeth on the axle a good idea?

I have a 49cc x7 pocket bike and I'm thinking about changing the clutch size from a 17 tooth to a 20 tooth and the rear axle from 54 teeth to 44 teeth. I know this is going to increase my top speed but will hurt my acceleration. Is the top speed gain worth the acceleration lost? how much extra speed do you think I'll get?

If the engine is stock or slightly modified you will be sorry. The stock or slightly modified engine does not make enough power to overcome the change in gearing. You will definitely lose a lot of acceleration. You could even lose some top end it the engine does not have enough power for this new final drive ratio.

If the engine is modified this is a completely different story. You will still lose some acceleration, however you will gain on top speed. Your lap times may not improve from the loss of acceleration though.

If you race this bike you may want to consult your rule book to make sure the bike will make it through tech inspection.
