Is there a big difference between MTB crank and a Road Bike crank?

I am building a bike... it is kind of a cycle-cross style. I have a MTB crank I can use... I was wondering if there would be a big difference between this and a road bike crank? I am not a racer I do it more for fitness and fun. Thanks
