you need to give output of the t.v to the speakers as a input.if you have amplifier then you can connect speakers directly to the amplifier you don't need t.v output for that just use it for video viewing.

I own a blu-ray home theater system and an HDTV but i don't watch that many movies. However, i do want to watch my favorite TV shows and hear them in surround sound in my home theater speakers but i don't know to set up the speakers with the TV. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!

you seek to feed the audio line output to the input of your audio amplifier. enter the model numbers into your search engine to seek the manuals or if it is easier, examine your devices carefully with a flashlight. for inputs, outputs, and model numbers. some jacks may be hiding on the rear or side or both or front cover of the tv.
this example presumes you are feeding cable box but not hdmi: instead of sending the red and white audio rca output to the tv, send it instead to the input of the audio amplifier.
