I didnt know this, but it works. Im not sure exactly where to go because i dont have an xbox anymore, but on your xbox console turn it on without a game in, and go to the menu that has xbox live.
When it tells you to choose between Gold or Silver, click silver (free one). It will say "are you sure?" or something like this. Click yes again, and it will say "You've received complimentary 30 day Gold subscription!" It really works. Sorry that my directions are hasty, but im sure you know where to sign up for xbox live on the console menus.
