i asked once but then didn't get one and forgot. now i'm getting one for sure but i really want one that plays PS2 games, even if i have to buy one with a smaller hard drive. oh and isn't there some sort of device that will transfer save files from memory cards to the PS3 hdd? stupid sony....

ALL PS3's can play PS1 games. Period.
Now it gets pretty interesting when it comes to the PS2 games.
There are many types of PS3's out there, but only two types are still in stores.

I will sort them by GB.
-20GB: Has 4 USB slots, and can play ALL PS2 games.
-40GB: Has 2 USB slots, and CAN'T play PS2 games.
-60GB: Known to be the best PS3. Pretty much because it has a lot of memory, and can play ALL PS2 games, and has 4 USB slots.

Now it might get kind of confusing. Sony had made 2 different 80GB PS3's. Only one of them is on stores.

The old 80GB (one that is NOT on stores right now): Has 4 USB slots, and it can play PS2 games, but not all of the PS2 games, so this one is kind of hard to rely on if you want it to play all of your PS2 games.

The new 80GB (one that IS on stores right now): Has 2 USB slots, and can't play PS2 games.

160GB: This one is not that great since people never find themselves needing that much memory, and it's expensive, and it can't play PS2 games. It also has 2 USB slots. It is on stores right now.

So if you want a brand new PS3, you can only buy the new 80GB, and the 160GB. The others, however, you can still find on gamestop, which is a store (lol), but only used ones. You can also buy those on eBay, Amazon, and other places online. You can buy the ones that are not on stores online, and you might find them in a NEW condition, but it would be expensive.

You might be thinking why the ones on stores are worse than the old ones, if new things are supposed to be better. The reason Sony took out the emulator (the thing that lets you play PS2 games) and the 2 additional USB slots, is because when the PS3's had all that, they were very expensive, and people just couldn't afford it, and Sony lost too much money. So they couldn't just drop the prices like that with leaving all that good stuff inside, so they took it out, so that it won't hurt them even more.

Yes, there is an adapter. It will let you transfer save files from memory cards o the PS3.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh dudeeeeeee dont make the same mistake dude, i buy a ps3 that doest support ps2 backward compability and i am really piss off, ok dude listen, there are 2 types of ps3 one have 2 usb on the front and the other 4 on the back...
listen carefuly

buy the one with 4 usb that the one that support compability

There are 3.

The 60GB model
The 20GB model
The OLD 80GB model, not the one in stores now. It has 4 USB ports, that's how you can tell them apart. The one out now only has 2.

And yes, there is an adapter that lets you transfer files.

I think that all versions of ps3 will play ps2 games. Usually when systems get upgraded they can still play old games. if they didn't, nobody would buy the new systems - it would get too costly

The only PS3 models that'll play PS2 games are the 20GB and 60GB launched in 2006 and then there were two 80GB bundles released in 2007 that also played PS2 games. Those bundles were the Motorstorm and Metal Gear Solid 4 80GB !

Note: The Motorstorm and Metal Gear Solid 4 80GB PS3 models only played a few PS2 titles as they both used software emulation programs. The 20 and 60GB models had the PS2 "Emotion Engine CPU" installed on board which made them near 100% compatible with all PS2 games !

No other PS3 models will PLAY PS2 GAMES !

The current 80GB and 160GB PS3 WILL NOT PLAY PS2 GAMES !

You can transfer your PS2 game saves from your PS2 memory card to the PS3's hard drive by making a "virtual save" by using a memory card adapter !

It's not the type of PS3, it's the type of game, some PS2 games will play on a PS3 and some won't, i'm sure you could find a list of games that work. You could try to modify your PS3 to play PS2 games, but there are very high chances that it would break, and if you take it apart

They all have the power to do it some might not be as clear and graphically incline like others good luck and enjoy

The older versions of the PS3 are backwards compatible. Specifically the 60 GB, but they don't make that model any more. There is a usb cord that allows you to attach your memory card to the ps3.
