what setting do i go to, to make sure i only hear people through my headset, or at least hear them through my tv and headset?
 
set the headset as the input and output devices in audio device settings to hear everything over the headset
you can set the tv as the input and hear people on it instead of the headset
you can hear chat over one or the other , not both at once as this would cause feedback
