ok so i just got a vizio HD tv and im thinking in getting a blue ray player and a HDMI cable for the TV.

so my first question is there is the Magnavox blue ray player for about $78 at walmart and its a really cheap blue ray player compared to sony, samsung, etc so my question is, will this blue ray player give me the same picture quality as the other expensive brands? i really dont care about all those other features that the other blue ray players come with. and if anyone has this blue ray player are you satisfied with it, or does it have it's problems???
or should i get vizio's $98 blue ray player, that one comes with internet apps like facebook, but i wont be able to connect it to the internet.

and my second question is what kind of HDMI cable do i buy? do i just buy whatever brand that i find? ive notice their price ranges from $10 to $80 or more, is there any difference? or do i need to buy a specific kind?

I strongly encourage you to buy a blu-ray player that you can easily connect to the internet. Firmware updates are an easy way to break the blu-ray experience if you don't have one when you need it. Honestly I'd suggest buying the PS3. For the money it's one of the most full-featured players on the market with guaranteed support and new features for several years to come and above it you're looking at AVphile players of dubious return on investment.

As above monoprice is the best for cables. You don't need anything fancy. I got all mine for less than $10 (2m lengths)

In the early days - cheap BluRay players were not so good. But we are in the 4th or 5th generation now and even the cheap players give great sound and video.

Get the Media Bridge brand from Amazon for decent cables for about $10. Better cables can be had but start out inexpensive.

The cheaper players will not have as good a picture quality as the more expensive ones, but to get a better player you would have to spend $150 or more to get better quality..the cheaper players have less memory so they skip more often and they are much slower they take a long time to load sometimes as long as 2 minutes to load....also your color rendition is not as good...the larger your TV the more you will notice the difference, as for HDMI cables under 15 ft any HDMI cable will do for longer lengths you need a high quality high speed cable....

All HDMI cable is not the same, however all of it will work sufficiently for HD television. Go here for the best prices on HDMI cable (and any other cable needs you have).

Prices are dropping quickly on Bluray players across the board. The main difference in your $78 model and the $350 models is that the more expensive ones have built-in WiFi connection capability and can stream NetFlix movies through a wireless Internet signal. They can also access YouTube, Facebook and other Internet sites depending on which brand you buy and how much you pay.

If all you want to do is watch Bluray discs, the $78 model is probably OK.

One thing about Bluray players is that the firmware requires frequent updating. So the player needs to have some way to update the firmware. With the WiFi models, it updates automatically over the Internet; otherwise you need at least an Ethernet connection or some way to use a USB drive to download the firmware update over your computer and then transfer it to the DVD player.
