question on dvd recordable disc?

Is there a difference in brands when it comes to recordable disc, I bought sony dvd-r a while back, then i Bought memorex dvd-r , the Memorex dvd-r didn't want to play in my dvd player. so i went back to sony, but i was wondering if brands really matter.
