im not against grades and competition but the concept of GPA and policies are really dumb: for example, if someone decides to challenge themselves by taking an advanced college course and then they decide "i dont have the knowledge necessary to complete this course" they can withdrawl with a W before a specific date, however some schools count a W as an F when computing GPA.
Grades also dont measure the quality of a student. If a teacher gives many assignments and then one day a student who normally gets A's on the assignments forgets to do the homework that day, and the teacher gives a 0, that 0 will pull his grades down , if he wants an A in the class and he forgets to do one assignment , he will need to get 100 percent A on 9 assignments to cancel out that one "bad day" : even the 9 perfect assignments would only earn him a 90 percent (any lower is a B).
