when i click update it tells me that updating to ios 5.1.1 will delete all my apps and media and that to preserve this content I need to apply this update to the computer where I sync apps, music, etc.

It also says that there are purchased items on my ipod that have not been transferred to my itunes library and it tells me that i should transfer them before i update it. What does this mean? and how do I do it?

SO i also have my Ipod backed up on the computer but i'm not sure if all my apps, music, etc are synced to the computer. If i update it? will i be able to preserve all my apps, music, etc? especially my apps because i have probably spent $50 on apps for my ipod alone but i also want to keep all my music so if i download and update to iOS 5.1.1 will i be able to keep all these things.
Your help is very appreciated!

You are a bit late. The rest of the world up dated to IOS 5 two years ago.

Make sure you download and install iTunes 5.1.1. You must close all other screens, etc on your computer to install. Restart computer.

Step 1. Transfer purchases from iPod.
Step 2. Right click on iPod name. It's brings up an option to back up the iPod. (Note, also has the restore option you need after you update). Click on back up.
Step 3. Start the update to the iPod. It takes a long time. Leave it alone! Wait for a prompt.
Step 4. Follow directions to set up the cloud and iPod on IOS 5
Step 5. Right click and restore your data to the iPod.
