Toshiba DVD player suddenly stops working?

Hi, we have been playing Lost dvds up until tonight when the DVD simply wouldn't play - it went so far as registering load and then instead of displaying PLAY it just had horizontal lines, just a shot in the dark but does anyone have a clue as to what might be wrong?
