Update my iPod Touch to IOS 4 without losing anything?

I have a 2nd gen Touch and want to update to IOS4 (mostly for the playlists on the go) but I don't have my music and movies synced with my iTunes. Is there anyway to update without wiping my Touch clean. Or, alternatively, is there a way to backup everything I have on my iTouch so I can sync it after I update it?
