What are DVD's and Blue ray disc being replaced by?

Just heard today that dvds, blue ray are being replaced in the future by digitial downloads? what are digitial downloads? can someone fill me in on this stuff? I can't keep up with technology, I heard even GPS units will be replaced by what i dont know.

They're not replacing DVDs. A Blue Ray is just like a DVD except it's blue and it can hold more video.

Netflix, Blockbuster and others have on-line delivery of movies and many companies can deliver software the same way. Many new TV's are internet enabled to accept streaming movies, so what you need is a direct high speed internet connection, a monthly service fee, and you can order online. There are methods of download of large amounts of data and a lot of it is done illegally and really messes up PC's with virus and trojans, so I will leave torrents out of this.
That is digital download. There are other services available competing.
