in England? I don't mean using a regular car GPS system like a TomTom in pedestrian mode because I don't own a car and don't want to pay for a feature I won't need.

handheld gps systems are great for walking but in order to select the best for your needs you will need to see a gps buying guide. no one can pick your gps for you, but you will know which features matter the most to you. look over a buying guide for gps's and decide what features you are looking for and what features you want to purchase in your new gps
