I went through this same scenario a few months ago with Charter Cable and after research decided on a Netgear N300 wireless. relatively low cost, works fine with laptops, my Sony Blueray as well as two cell phones and a wireless Epson printer. This was a snap to setup and Netgear offers the Genie software for DL so you can monitor all these connections along with the speed for each device and access to the router thru your PC or laptops will allow you to change the network name and password to whatever you want. Also allows you to setup a guest network so you dont have to give your primary password away everytime a visitor walks in with a cell
Most wireless routers will get the job done but Im happy with the Netgear. Solid connection with good monitoring software.
My cable connection gives me pretty close to 30MB speed, with the wireless, speed can drop considerably depending on the placement of the router , but never less than 3MB. When i need to download big files , I connect with ethernet or just sit my laptop or cell phone near the router
BTW, mine is Netgear WNR3500L N300 Gigabit Wireless Router ... has 4 ethernet ports and a USB port so you can share or store files on the network via memory stick or external drive.
