What handheld video games are good for 4 year olds?

I'm looking at either one of the Leapfrog type where he can learn letters, numbers, etc and it can grow with him up to about age 7 or do you think he could handle a Nintendo DSi or DS Lite? Not for long periods of play, but to help him while traveling.
