is it just how bright the screen is and how clear the sound is?

they can be exactly the same. The difference is the optical media device.

The normal laptop probably only reads and writes DVD's. The one with Blu Ray reads and writes Blu Ray.

Blu Ray can contain 30 GB of data (and maybe even 60 GB in the future with dual layers). So you can make more easy back-ups on discs. You only need 4 blu ray discs for a back-up of 120 Gb instead of 30 DVD's.

High definition movies are also sold on blu-ray because only these discs have enough space. HD movies have a higher resolution, better colours, better sound and more options.

So if you're a movie freak, go for the blu ray.

p.s. it's Blu-ray not blue ray.
