What kinds of things do people do on a cruise on a research vessel?

I was invited to go to one to be a helper to the scientists and I'm wondering whether I should go for 17 days. I don't know if I'm gonna be bored the entire time. It is the atlantis research vessel carrying a submarine. They will be taking samples from the sea floor like tube worms.

I did an internship on a research vessel some years ago. We were so busy collecting data and analyzing the samples that we didn't have time to worry about lack of things to do. However, we did find time to do some scuba diving.

It's only for 17 days (I was out for 3 months). You should do it. It's good to have on your CV at the very least.
