What would you think about a person driving a Volvo 240 who makes Good Money?

You sound a lot like me, except for the good money part. For a while, I was trying to have the oldest vehicle in the parking lot at work, but the competition's too tough for me: '70 Nova, '69 Plymouth Satellite, '71 Chevelle. If I were making a couple hundred grand a year, I'd still drive an old Chevy, Buick or Ford.

I am a professional who works for one of the largest energy firms in Texas. I make really good money, nearly six figures. Most of my associates drive new cars that cost around $45-65k. We all park in the company garage, and only a select group to park in there. I spent $1k on my car on a whelm because I wanted to drive the legend of Volvo.

I get a lot of stares when I am driving into the garage, I had the security guards chase me once because they thought I was one of the regular employees, as we hired on about 150 customer service people about the time I bought my car.

None of my associates never say a thing about my car, but no one wants me to take my car when we go to lunch, and I offer all the time. I call my car old school, and I have put about $2k into parts to make my little 240 to look new and fancy for all it's worth.

Then comes my boss. He has given me two pay promotions this year, out of the blue.

I sometimes laugh at the whole thing, and think about going out and buying something fairly reasonable to commute in, but the old Volvo is holding up, dependable, good gas mileage and she has never stranded me yet.

What would think if you saw a guy like me, in a good position in life, with a little old Volvo?

BTW, this is not a hoax question. I have a couple of vehicles at home I never take to work because they don't fix in the garage, plus they are expensive to fuel.

Its not about what u drive, its about who u r.

I faced such a problem, I have a 91 mercedes w126 chase. All my friends keep telling me change that car and get yourself a better one!! you have a lot of money. But since i was a kid i loved those cars and i will always love them. Very nice exterior look, nice leather wood interior and smooth and power full engine, also its a car when mercedes build was proud of and so am i. I love that mercedes and i want to keep it, its my car and its my life and its others problem to live with it.

You don't have to change something you like because others don't. Live your life and believe me driving a car you like is more fun, comfortable and enjoyable than a 2009 volvo...

Stick to the volvo and enjoy each time you drive it until you yourself get bored of it.

I'd say buy an American car. We are in the middle of a recession and our automobile companies are failing, which will cause our ecomony to spiral ever further. Do your part as an American and buy an American made car. Its shameful it these times to still be purchasing foreign cars!

I would probably wonder why you don't have a fancy car.

If you like your Volvo, by all means, keep driving it. As long as you take good care of it, you will get many more good years out of it. Besides, in these uncertain economic times, having a car note is a little scary.

BTW, Jeff Bezos (founder and CEO of Amazon.com) kept his old Volvo station wagon for a couple of years after the company became huge. In an interview, Diane Sawyer asked him why he still had that car. Shortly afterward, he traded it in for a new Accord station wagon.
