when i connect my ipod into my stereo of my car's aux i can only hear one side

why is that? if i play the radio all speakers work fine or a cd. But when the ipod or mp3 player connects to the aux just one side works and later both then agian just one side.
 
question is what knid of stereo and how is it hooked to the aux? through ipod cable or some aux jacks. What it sounds like is there is a break in the wiring.
