Where can I find out where a pre 2001 car is from from the number plate?

I have found a way to find out the new style number plates but could someone please tell me a way to find out where older plates are from.

(This is for geography coursework)
I know that it is the last 3 numbers but i need a list of what they mean

I think it's the the last two letters of the three whichever end of the plate the letters are at. It's mostly the same letters as are in use on the newer plates.
