Why are so many people obsessed with cell phones and texting?!?!?!!?

I'm seriously annoyed. They treat it like texting is their only life and they even do it in class sometimes. Some people even act cool by having one, but there actually not smart when it comes to classes and tests. Seriously?? Why????
