why wont an MP4 file play on DVD?

i made a video one using an .AVI file the other using a .MP4 file... the avi file on playback was okay. but the mp4 file only played audio on playback. why is this? and if it has to be avi, where can i find a file converter?

if you burn it on a DVD and play it using a DVD player (like with your TV and all) i use DVD Flick

if you just want to convert .mp4 to .avi use Handbrake or Format Factory
