Personally i don't know, and we'll never know, so it's not that big of an issue for me. But if they weren't spies after all, and really were a group of hikers who enjoyed adventuring in the Mid East, and figured they would go near the border of Iran, I really do agree... they must have eaten a few rocks somewhere along the way.
