can i use a blue ray dvd player with my current surround sound speaker system...

...will it still be surround sound? mine has stopped giving out just the voices of the main characters
 
Yes, you can. Just connect optical cable from Blu-ray player to system.
 
Yes. Blu-ray can still play regular dvd's & provide surround sound. But if your equipment is really old or just out dated, then you'll never hear the full impact of Blu-ray. You'll need to upgrade to a receiver that can decode DolbyTru HD & DTS HD master audio. The Yamaha RX-V665 can do the job easily & has great flexibility. G'luck!
