The talking in the DVD has a very reduced sound- you can just barely hear it at full volume. The background music is normal. When the two go together, you can't hear the dialogue at all.

This is a standard DVD that's worked on other players, this is the first time I've played it on my new Macbook. But I've played other DVDs on this Macbook with no problem.

I've looked online in help forums and found nothing. Anyone have any advice?

Make sure your sound settings are set for stereo two-channel sound.

I'll bet your machine is trying to play it as 5.1 surround sound, and you don't have a center channel speaker. The center channel is of course where all the dialogue usually is.
