Do I have to use the DVD player included for surround sound to work?

I would like to purchase a surround sound system for my PS3, for DVDs, games etc Is this possible? Alot of surround sounds systems include a DVD player do I have to use this?
And maybe if you have some extra time, what surround sound would you recommend, budget of around £250-300. Thanks alot. xx

To get surround sound DD 5.1, the pS3 and the DVD Player would have to have a Digital, an Optical or an HDMI output.
If they do, you would connect them to compatible inputs on your DD 5.1 amp (or receiver).
Make sure that the receiver includes at least two or more of the compatible inputs, some time later you may like to connect a Satellite receiver.
I bought a Panasonic amp (no internal DVD player) for U$S160, but this model has been discontinued, search on BestBuy.com.
