How do you upgrade a 1st generation ipod touch with ios 1 to ios 3?

I just got a used, 1st generation ipod touch. It still has the version 1 software. It can't support ios 4 software, so I want to just put version 3 on it to get the app store. Where can I buy and download the software from?

Hey Noah, Here is a link I found where you can download the 3rd generation software for free. I just upgraded my 1.1 software to 3.1 on my 1st generation iPod Touch and am downloading apps like crazy right now.

1st Gen iPod Touch can run iOS 3.1.3. Do you have the most recent iTunes?

If iTunes is being gay, you can download 3.1.3 from this site.
Select iPod Touch 1G (3.1.3/7E18) from the pulldown menu, and download the IPSW.

In order to upgrade, you must turn off the iPod Touch, then hold the home button while plugging in the cable. It will start in recovery mode and in iTunes, you can option-click on the restore button and it will let you pick the IPSW firmware file you downloaded.

This will completely erase the iPod Touch, so make sure your friend has a recent sync in his iTunes. He will later be able to restore his content.
