How to convert files to work on DVD players? ps2 ps3 and dvd players plz help?

Im trying to convert video files to work on a dvd, i tried alot of formats, MP2 WMA and MPG it just wont work says unable to read disk, when i use program like convertodvd it leaves an annoying watermark and the quality is terrible. how can i convert a file to dvd without a pay program anyone know anything completely free? what is the exact format i need the videos to be to make them work on all dvd players. and its not the DVD disk itself cuz when i use convertodvd it works fine except the annoying watermark and crap quality. plz help
