I bought a PS3 and it plays games and regular dvds but it wont play Blueray....

...Is there a setting or something? I just bought it two days ago. It is a 320gb and I rented Avatar Blueray. When I put it in it just goes blank try pushing start it says cannot perform this now then a start symbol pops up in bottom left corner and options on the right I continued to press start and nothing ever happened? what to do??
All my games a blueray and they play where would i need to go to get the latest versions
