recommend a good one? I'm frequently told that the cable makes a huge difference to the quality of picture but there are lots of cables to choose from, some very expensive. I need some guidance please.

check monoprice.com its an online cable store. I have a duffle bag stuffed right full with random AV cords. its a nerdy obsession of mine!!! but in all my years I never seen such a slick operation as monoprice.com. their prices are so low its friggen retarded...!!! some cables cost just a few bucks. and they definitely feel high quality....some of their cables come in 1.5 foot lengths so you can buy one of those and hack it open to see what the wiring looks like inside the jacket if thats your thing. I would check there for sure. as far as ultra high end cables improving the quality of your video?? I would not pay any attention to that....the only difference is how much money you have left in your wallet. the highest point on the Audio video chain is the SOURCE which is the DVD or the CD etc.. its where the sound or the video "starts"
so you start by improving that. having thousand dollar cables will not make a bad CD sound good. Also if at all possible, use HDMI instead of component. although component is cabable of transporting a 1080p signal. many devices will not send that type of signal through components....long story short...

First, you should use HDMI to connect your BluRay player so you can get the full 1080p picture. If you need to use component cables for whatever reason, you don't need expensive ones. These are fine: http://www.circuitcity.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3738403&Sku=ULT40200
