Newbie question, is the a Play Station Networks compatible with PS3?

I am new to the playstation I just got one from target last night for my kids birthday and wanted to have it all set up for when he gets home from school tomorrow but for some reason I can't get it to connect the the Play Station Network? I am following the guide for it and can't figure out what is wrong. It turns on, and I think I have the internet plugged into it correctly but still nothing is happening. What am I doing wrong?? Any help would be great. Thanks!
Thank you for some of you taking my question seriously. I hadn't heard that the Play Station Network was down, I guess that is probably it. I will keep the question open in case someone knows how to fix the Play Station Networks so I can get it working for my kid's birthday.
 
I don't know if it is, sorry I'm a girl and don't really know about internets but I did get a playstation last week and I can't get mine to work either :( I wanted to play the barbie games and I think there is a sticker game too but you have to have an internets for it! I hope you kid is ok!!!!
 
is the username right, the password, the country, year, and internet connection. and 1 more thing the psn is down all over the world, just go to sonys update....... wait here it is PLZ BEST ANSWER

UPDATE: Articles posted throughout the day by major media outlets has repeatedly stated that Mariko Yasu mis-quoted the Sony representative by using the May 31, 2011 deadline. No confirmation from Sony exists either way.

After a long 3 weeks of outages for the PlayStation Network (PSN) and Qriocity services, Sony spokeperson Shigenori Yoshida confirmed today that “the company is in the process of adopting an improved security system and its plan to restart the services fully by May 31 [2011] is unchanged.” Additionally, he stated that “Sony is uncertain when it can resume the services.” All of this information was confirmed to Bloomberg by phone today to Mariko Yasu. Expect that Sony Online Entertainment will also be unavailable until this time.

Sony had loosely stated a goal of May 3 for partial service restoration. However, that time past without relief for gamers. With the new data of May 31, 2011 as a marker for complete services restoration, I wonder how many gamers will abandon the PlayStation Network in favor of Microsoft’s XBox?

The PlayStation Network is down at the moment that why you cannot connect to it until further notice. Everybody saying it will back online on 31st May is wrong The online side will be back within a few days hope this helps.
 
There is good news and bad news and Really BAD news:

Good: The PlayStation 3 is compatible with Play Station Networks.

Bad: The PlayStation Network is down and will not come back until 2013 when PlayStation 360(Waterproof version of Playstation 3) comes out.

Really Bad: Hackers have your personal info. They are taking a second mortgage on your house as we speak. They also have your home address and will probably come by to rape your wife and children.
