Playstation 3 Online Play With NTSC-U Console on European Servers?

Hello, I live in Europe. I heard Ps3 games are region-free. Question is If I buy an ps3 from America and buy a region-free game will I be able to play in European Servers in PSN or will it just direct me to American Servers? And what if I buy NTSC-U game? Can I play in European servers as well? Thanks in advance.
