No you are not stupid. I don't see why they can't just write cup. After all, it's only a 3 letter word. Another thing you might come across that some people who do not cook often may know...it a capital T only is tablespoon when the common abbreviation is Tbsp, and a small case t is teaspoon when the common abbreviation is tsp.
