What is a good free DVD ripping program?

I'm trying to rip my DVDs onto my hard drive so that they are easier to carry around and I am looking for a program to rip them into an .avi file. Ideally reasonably quick and good quality ripping.

Can anyone tell me a good one that I can get preferably for free online?
