When Burning DVD's how can I be sure they play on all home players?

When burning DVD's Ive noticed some disc will play on some players in my home while not playing on others. Is there a way to ensure that the disc I make will play on all my players. Like perhaps a setting I can use when making the disc that will ensure burning success?
