Why do people of the Islamic religion fast only during the day?

We just started going over Islam in my AP World History class and our student teacher did not know the answer to my question.We did discuss that they fast only during the day and then basically have a feast at night. I don't understand why they are allowed to eat during the night and don't fully understand why the must fast at all..?
 
This way the Muslim can party all night during their fast. It is obviously neither a true nor a biblical fast. They just change the time for Happy Hour.
 
Because Ramadan in not a real fast; it's a joke an mockery against fasting for a self-righteous people. They sleep during the day during this fast and pig-out at night, as if they're fooling God or anyone.
