will a dvd player that plays DivX files also play avi files?

I'm about to buy a dvd player that says it plays DivX and Jpeg as well as the usual DVD RW etc. But most of the video files on my computer are .avi extension and Xvid. I can't work out if this is the same as DivX or not, and I'd hate to waste the money buying it only to find these files are different.
