Can "Average" DVD Players play Double Layer DVD+R's? Playstation2 or XBOX?

A friend of mine needs some cheering up so I wanted to burn him some movies and I got a SPECTACULAR deal on a few DVD+R 8gb Double Layer Disks.

I can fit a whole trilogy on the 1 disk and have it be decent v/a but I'm worried that the average DVD Player won't be able to play it.

Any advice?

I'd be burning it with Nero 8
