We live in the Bay Area (with kids who are 7, 5, and 3) and are planning to take a week long trip (over the last week of October) down to San Diego to visit Legoland, the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, and SeaWorld.

But along the way (or once we arrive), we'd also like to spend a couple of days hiking and perhaps a night camping. Any suggestions of places that would be good given the ages of our kids. I should add that my wife is not really a camper, so the roughing it would definitely have to be light.

Check out sites in oceanside. Its right outside of Camp Pendleton. Nice beach, not to many people around, but still close to town.

check state parks and camp grounds. Also hiking trail in san diego county.

If your wife isn't really into camping, you might also consider a vacation rental.

Have fun in San Diego!
