Grand Theft Auto IV is a fun sandbox game, and the next installment is coming in September. Definitely worth checking out.
There's also Saints Row: The Third, a wacky, over-the-top sandbox, and Sleeping Dogs, an open-world game set in Hong Kong with a heavy emphasis on martial arts melee combat.
